Ogunda Okana (Ògúndá Òkànràn) carries an important teaching in Ifá: having strength is not enough. We must develop the wisdom, patience, and character to know when and how to use that strength.
Ogunda carries the energy of Ogún—iron, work, determination, courage, persistence, and the ability to cut through obstacles. Okana brings intensity, movement, passion, and the potential for conflict when our emotions are not controlled.
Together, Ogunda Okana teaches us:
🔥 Do not allow your own fire to burn the road you are trying to open.
Sometimes the greatest enemy standing in our way is not another person. It can be our own anger, impatience, pride, impulsiveness, or inability to remain quiet when silence would serve us better.
Ogunda Okana reminds us that not every battle needs to be fought.
Someone may provoke you.
Someone may speak against you.
Someone may misunderstand you.
Someone may even work against your progress.
But your response determines whether their actions become an obstacle on your path.
Control your tongue. Control your temper. Control your actions.
There is tremendous power in knowing when to speak, when to act, and when to simply continue walking toward your destiny.
Ogún’s machete can clear the road—but that same blade must be handled with discipline.
This Odù therefore teaches the importance of Ìwà Pẹ̀lẹ́—good and balanced character. Strength without character can become destruction. Courage without wisdom becomes recklessness. Ambition without patience can cause us to destroy opportunities that were already coming toward us.
Ogunda Okana also reminds us to work.
Do not expect prayer alone to clear a road that requires your own effort. Ask for spiritual guidance, make ẹbọ when prescribed, honor your Orí, and then put your hands to work.
Your Orí must guide you.
Your character must protect you.
Your discipline must sustain you.
Your actions must support your prayers.
When dealing with enemies, jealousy, gossip, or opposition, the teaching is especially important: do not become what you are fighting against.
Protect yourself. Cleanse yourself. Pray. Follow the guidance revealed through divination. But do not allow another person’s negativity to control your character or determine your actions.
Sometimes victory is not defeating an enemy.
Victory is continuing to prosper while the enemy loses the ability to disturb your destiny.
Ogunda Okana asks us:
Are you using your strength to build—or destroy?
Are your words opening roads—or creating unnecessary battles?
Are you acting from wisdom—or reacting from anger?
The person who learns these lessons becomes difficult to stop because their strength is no longer uncontrolled.
It has become disciplined power.
May our Orí guide us toward ire.
May Ogún clear the obstacles before us.
May Èṣù open the proper roads.
May Ọ̀rúnmìlà give us the wisdom to recognize them.
Àṣẹ. 🙏🏾
